After downloading the file, I have drug it to both my Applications folder and the Desktop and used both the click on icon to open process and by clicking Control-Open. I click yes on the button that warns that the application was downloaded from the Internet to open anyway, and then I get the "read-only" error.

Once you install Yosemite, the file will automatically erase itself, so it's important to make a bootable drive first. If you want to install first and then make a bootable drive, make a copy of the installer app in another location so you can access it later. Hello!!! I NEED HELP!! I know I'm a few years late but I JUST came into possession of a 2007 macbook (A1181) and I'm upgrading the RAM (to 4GB) and hard drive (to 500 GB). I was hoping to make myself a bootable installer of Yosemite but I cannot manage to find anywhere to download it. That is the only thing hanging up my adventure. I'd be open to any other macOS as long as it can run the newest iTunes. I'm wary of going too high since this laptop is so old and I'm pretty new to doing my own upgrades. THANKS!! :)

X8 for Windows is also now available and the install is succesful as of Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, 10am. Note the Windows directions you are now required to download before downloading the installer file, say to install 7-zip to properly extract the licence.dat file. This is not necessarily required. If you right click on the zip file and see the option "Extract All" this should properly extract the installer and license file. Where you run into problems is just double-clicking on the zip file, then the installer won't see the license.dat file. Extract All or 7-zip solve this issue.
